Wooden Sheds for All Purposes

Wooden sheds can fulfil many distinct needs for different families, ranging from simple wooden storage for garden hand tools to studios for artists, music rooms, gyms, separate sun rooms, auto storage and even additional rooms for your home, bedrooms, bathrooms and chill out venues.

Storage places

Safe storage is always necessary for families unless you are very good at throwing things away or handing them on to friends for recycling. Many people buy their first wooden shed because they need somewhere to put the lawnmower, garden tools and the table and wooden chairs that they use outside during the summer months. The shed may also be used for wood storage to keep the timber good and dry for those wonderful roaring winter fires.

The studio

If you are buying a wood shed to use as an artist’s studio there are many assessments to be made prior to purchasing. Firstly decide what you are going to do in the shed. If it is to be a purely painting studio and you generally paint canvases of 8’ square then you know that you have to have a shed with double doors and good roof height.

Equally if your painting is confined to miniatures then you need a much smaller space. If you work on installations then look at the type of thing you do and ensure that the space you buy is as big as you can afford but at least as big as you need.

Windows

Many sheds have perspex windows, but, unfortunately these tend to become opaque after a period of time so it is a good idea to install glass if at all possible.  If you are a painter you will need a lot of light for your work, so another idea is to install your own windows.  Many glass shops throw out faulty double glazing units and it might be possible to ask for these at a reduced rate and bring them home.  Cut out a hole in the timber of the walls to the right size for these glass units and fix in place using silicone mastic.

Electricity

You will need to employ a qualified person to install electricity into your studio.  It is a much safer option to get in a professional and to get it wired correctly so that it is safe to use a heater and as many lights as you need.  Many accidents and fires occur as a result of poor wiring and your insurance cover will be invalidated should you decide to go in that direction.

Purpose built wooden garden sheds

There are many companies that construct sheds for every eventuality.  A popular shed is the wooden summer house that children may often use as a playhouse.  It can be dressed up with curtains at the windows and children’s furniture and tea sets.  Your children will have many hours of fun playing ‘house’ with their friends and relations.  Another great option for kids is a tree house.  It doesn’t always need a tree as it may also be constructed on stilts, but it is great if you do have an appropriate tree that can be utilised for this purpose.

There are many other sheds that are available on today’s market, these may come with wiring, plumbing and insulation and can be used for virtually any purpose.  They are extremely useful for the expanding family or the home that has teenage children that need a space of their own.  Many families start their lives in cheap garden sheds and move on when they can afford to do so.  Wooden sheds are invaluable and if you get the best that you can afford and look after them well, they will last for a very long time.

We have a hardi-planked and shingled shed that came with our house. We use it for garden tools, etc. and it has electricity in it but little other natural light.

Do you use yours as an artist's studio?

My dad had built us a playhouse in the backyard when I was a child in Wisconsin. Had a lot of fun playing in it. Thanks for the memories!

Thank you, Peggy, for your comments. It was used as an art studio for a spell then a garden shed than a studio again. Is is still referred to as a studio but basically just stores things now. But it is electrified and has a refrigerator/freezer in in which is stuffed with stewed fruits and frozen vegetables. I don't think it is something I could do without, although I do have 3 of them lol.
