The crab is the cancer symbol which is one of the twelve astrology signs. The astrology signs are divided into 4 groups (or elements) of earth, fire, water and air. The cancer symbol (crab) is naturally a water sign along with the scorpion (Scorpio) and the fish (Pieces). Astrology signs can govern personalities by affiliating birth dates with the sun, moon, stars, planets and the interaction of the universe at an exact moment in time. Believers in astrology signs will often have small gold charms or cufflinks representing this sign. These charms are tiny lions, goats, bulls or in my own case a small golden crab which is my cancer symbol and good luck charm.

How astrology signs work

These are the divisions of the zodiac where the planets can influence the human condition. As the sun rotates around the earth it completes 360 degrees although not in a perfectly concentric circle (more of an egg or eclipse pattern). This circumference is divided by twelve giving a 30 degree portion to each segment which is a sign of the zodiac. The twelve in order are Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. They are similar to the twelve months of the year but offset by about 3 months i.e. Aries = April, Taurus = May and so on. The other difference is that of the start day which is usually around the 20th of each month.
