Arts and craft are still flourishing

Over the last few years there has been a huge rise in the interest in arts and craft. In every area of the subject from arts and craft for children to arts and craft for adults the ideas are rich and varied. There is a long history of arts and craft throughout the world. Some of the older crafts items are much sought after as antiques and sell for large sums of money. Hand-made quilts from the 1800s can be seen in many museums and galleries and pottery is very collectable particularly if it is handmade and unique. Native American crafts are still being sold in many stores in the US though antique crafts will obviously attain much higher prices than the reproduction contemporary pieces. Many of the items that are seen as craft items nowadays would have been a regular part of everyday life long ago and used in the context for which they were made.

Local arts and craft groups

Arts and craft in the local community

All around the world classes are being set up in local communities and people are learning how to paint, draw, make jewellery, make prints, re-upholster furniture, woodwork, metalwork, cake decorating, lace making, framing, weaving, pottery, beading, basket making, batik, rug making and tapestry. As well as the skills people are acquiring while attending the classes they are making new friends and acquaintances and contacts for future ventures. Look in your local paper or visit your library to find information on all kinds of classes. Some are held at night to facilitate those who are working and others will be available during the day for the unemployed or for those with time on their hands. The classes should affordable to everyone and some will be subsidised for those on low incomes.

Learning a craft

Sometimes it is possible to teach yourself a craft. The basics of knitting and sewing are easily learned and it is only when you need to complete something more complex that you may need to seek advice on how to proceed. Other crafts require more tools, machinery or materials and are probably best learned through an organised class so that you can discover if you like the craft before buying all the equipment. There are many excellent craft books on every subject that you could possibly want and after completing your class you may be able to progress further by researching your subject, alternatively find a more advanced class or do a weekend workshop with a professional in the discipline in which you are interested.

Save time and money through crafting

Some crafts take the form of being money savers, learning to knit and sew and cook can save you huge amounts of money and as the world is in the middle of a depression this may well be necessary in the future. To have the ability and skills to adapt or modify clothes that are no longer fashionable or to knit wonderful colourful sweaters/scarves and hats for yourself, your children and your friends is a huge asset, making nutritious meals, jams and preserves or tarts and cakes to sell or give away is also a wonderful skill and one that be of great benefit to the whole family.

Traditional skills handed down

Our mothers and grandmothers were taught how to knit, sew and cook indeed it was considered a prerequisite for a good wife to have these skills. Years ago girls as young as five or six would spend hours sewing fine samplers or completing intricate tapestries. These are now cherished as fine craft works of the period. It is only since the mid 1980s that needlework and home economics are no longer compulsory subjects for all girls in schools throughout the country.

Kids and craftwork

Children’s crafts are a completely different part of the arts and craft arena and have huge potential in the area of making money. Courses are run by a myriad of qualified and unqualified people. The aim of all the classes is for the child to enjoy themselves, to take part, make friends and hopefully to start a love for the creative process that will last a lifetime.

Art and crafts training

Some classes will take place as summer camps that a child can attend daily or weekly whilst on summer vacation. Many classes are after school or on a Saturday throughout the school year. These classes should be well supervised with at least two responsible adults in attendance at all times and not more than five children to one adult. Classes should be affordable and materials should be provided at a reasonable charge. Take care that your child wears protective clothing or clothes that don’t matter. The main aim of starting to learn a skill or craft is for the enjoyment and satisfaction of a thing well done. The availability of courses in Arts and craft means that everyone has an equal opportunity to learn.

Mark - I know a lot of women who are taking up these old crafts. It makes me happy to see, as they seem to have been forgotten for a while. If you don't mind, I would like to link my hub on one antique sampler to this one.
